What is it: The ultimate aim of lean manufacturing is the complete elimination of waste from the product creation process. Lean Assess is a thought process used to look at your business whether it is manufacturing, service or any other activity where you have a supplier and a customer/receiver and eliminate non value adding activities for the end customer.

Why use it: The key thought processes with Lean Assess are identifying 'waste' from the customer perspective and then determining how to eliminate it. Waste is defined as the activity or activities that a customer would not want to pay for and/or that add no value to the product or service from the customer's perspective. Once waste has been identified in the current state, a plan is formulated to reach the future state (post lean improvements) in an effective manner that encompasses the entire system.

Where to use it: Lean Assess is a philosophy of eliminating all non-value added activities or waste from manufacturing and all other support functions, hence through out the organisation. Lean production embraces a philosophy of continually increasing the proportion of value added activities of businesses through ongoing waste elimination. The essence of lean production is to reduce the amount of time needed to produce a product or service, throughout the entire product/service life cycle. It emphasizes continuous improvement, inventory reduction, cycle time reduction, quality improvement, so on and so forth. The 5 potential benefits from the effective implementation of a lean production system may include:

  • Reduction of inventory requirements
  • Reduction of floor space requirements
  • Reduced waste due to waiting, movement, etc.
  • Reduced cycle time of processes, etc.

When to use it: Anytime a company needs to remove waste form their operations.

How to use it: In order to reach the future state, organizations going lean use any number of the common Lean tools (Enterprise Value Stream Mapping, 5S, Six Sigma, Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED), Kanban, Cells, one piece flow, Supermarkets etc.). When the knowledge and tools of lean are applied properly, then you will dramatically decrease your lead time, decrease your costs (bottom line), decrease defects and increase your ability to respond to the ever-changing customer demands.

The template package runs through the 7 steps of waste in an organisation to assist in removing waste and non value added activities:

1. Over production
2. Over processing
3. Transportation
4. Motion
5. Inventory
6. Waiting
7. Scrap and defects
