What is it: A "Marketability Evaluation" is what all product developers should have completed prior to attempting to market their products. A "Marketability Evaluation" basically considers whether the product is "Marketable" within the current and future market, i.e. is the product competitive with other products currently on the market.

Why use it: A "Marketability Evaluation" means looking at your new product to find out what its market worthiness is. Would anyone buy your product? Can it be made at the right price? this process determines if it is worthwhile to put resources into a product or not. Product development is a very competitive market, you will need to be able to objectively decide if your new product will be able to do all of the following:

  • Can fulfill a consumer's needs or desires.
  • Can be manufactured and sold at the right price, sold at no more than five times what it costs to make.
  • Can be delivered to market, a way to distribute your product is in place and the market opportunity is established.
  • Can pass safety, legal, environmental and performance expectations or standards.

Where to use it: For assessing the feasibility of a new product development.

When to use it: It is an excellent idea to evaluate your new product early in the development stage. You can start with your own opinion and that of colleagues, However, an objective opinion is required, and often using the study outside of close (Uninfluenced) known people can often return tangible results. Be sure to use a "Confidentiality Agreement" if you you intend to request other peoples assistance outside your own organisation.

How to use it: Use a pad of paper and write down everything you know about your invention concerning its: legality/regulatory, safety, impact on society including benefits and novelty, aesthetics, performance, profitability, market demand and size, potential for new markets, development status and time to market, manufacturing costs and methods, pricing, competition, consumer appeal, product drawbacks, licensing potential, inventor's reputation or track record, and intellectual property protection status.

Important notes: A "Marketability Evaluation" should not be confused with a "Market Analysis". A "Market Analysis" merely considers trends, consumption users and types of products in the market of your product. However, a "Marketability Evaluation" determines if your product can offer something else (price, uniqueness, quality) to customers from the "Market Analysis" that other products may not.
